Governor Gary Herbert has decided to not seek another term as governor of Utah, which means 2020 will be an important election for Utah's future. So who's running?
So far, candidates who have officialy announced they are seeking the Republican nomination for governor are: Businessman Jeff Burningham, Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, and Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee Winder Newton.
Also rumored to be considering a run are: former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr., Republican National Committeeman Thomas Wright, Representative Rob Bishop, former Utah Speaker of the House, and others.
All the other candidates have long careers in politics and as politicians. Jeff Burningham stands apart as someone who has spent his career building and leading businesses.
Burningham started his first tech company as a student at BYU. He later sold thta company and joined a large company as an executive vice president at the age of 25. He had a lot of success investing in real estate, but had the foresight to pull out before the market crashed. He and a couple of partner then started investing in real estate again and built one of Utah's fastest growing companies that now employs hundred of people.
Jeff and his partners understood that an adequate supply of venture capital was the missing piece in Utah’s economy-in-waiting. And having experienced first-hand the difficulty entrepreneurs face in obtaining capital, they identified the best start-up teams with the most promising ideas and provided the necessary funding to get their new companies off the ground. In the decade since, Jeff and his partners have invested $40M and mentored 40+ start-ups along the Wasatch front, supporting these entrepreneurs in creating more than 4,000 jobs to date.
To quote Sesame Street, "one of these things is not lke the others." Jeff Burningham stands alone as a political outsider with an impressive track record of success in the private sector. Jeff knows firsthand what it takes to start and grow a business, and the impact that excessive government taxation and regulation have on small businesses. He is the kind of leader Utah needs at this time.
